Following Pagan's rules is a part of trying to do things his way. I'm strongly considering being done with that.

Does he know that?

[He gives her five minutes. Five minutes in case she lost track of time. But when she doesn't budge on his item, he wanders over to the greenhouse, uncomfortable as it makes him, and shoves his hands in his pockets to hide his feelings about being here.]

Well, well, well, what's all this?

You don't have to be in here.

[She says, immediately regretting having picked this particular place to make her little stand.]

You can just go.

[ John will use his hand to wave at Pagan, but he's just staying there. ]

[He glances between the two and shakes his head at her. John gets a quick dip of his head, but he's really in no mood for pleasantries.]

You're right. I don't have to be in here, but - alas, you've forced my hand. So here I am.

What happened?

I've decided that all this was an interesting experiment, but not worth the pain and effort of hitting my head against a brick wall over and over again. So, I'll leave the greenhouse--

[She stands stiffly, a hand still curled protectively over the rat that's snoozing inside her sleeve.]

But I'm through with curfew.

[He casts a nervous glance behind her and then to the doors.]

Oh? And why is that?

[Get the fuck out of here, Pagan!!! She quickens her pace, casting several glances back at John as she goes.]

I just told you why.

Yes, darling, I heard whatever you're posturing about. I want the real answer.

[He keeps his hands in his pockets and matches her pace.]

She doesn't want to apologize without making me work for it. And accommodate her. And that's my line.

[ He doesn't give a shit about Pagan knowing. ]

[Her pace slows, and she turns back around fully.]

I can give you one that isn't well thought out anytime! But I thought we were going to have a real talk, and I met you more than halfway.

[Pagan stops with her.]

Well, what's the apology for?

Hurting him and Arthur. Obviously.

[He looks between them, lowering his voice.]

So why do you think you need to meet him halfway? You're not the wronged party, darling.

Because he wants something that is very difficult and vulnerable for me to give, that's why. Or he wants a fake apology, but I'm not giving him a fake apology.

[It's a weird little quirk of her internal sense of right and wrong. Sure, there are plenty of circumstances under which she'll lie to people. Sure, she'll hurt John if she thinks it's what Natalie needs. But if she apologizes for it, it's damn well going to be the best, most heartfelt apology in the world.]

I don't want a fake apology.

[ A little bit of a growl. ]

If you need time to work it out yourself or with Pagan, fine. I can wait. I will wait.

But I'm not going to sit here and placate you while you decide how much or how little you fucked up.

No, John, you're assuming I'm only looking to let myself off the hook, and as per your promise, I expect you to stop that right now.

I am not. I also said nothing about 'letting yourself off the hook'. That's you putting words in my mouth.

You said you were trying to work out how you 'think and feel' about it. And that you can't give a real apology without doing so.

[Pagan holds up his hands, physically stepping between them.]
