There had been some nervous excitement, admittedly, at learning the Admiral made proper announcements to pair off inmates with their wardens.

Far more thrilling, then, to learn that while Arthur only had a temporary inmate as of yet, John's was permanent. That he'd get a file and everything.

"Well, John!" He's thrilled for his partner, and his tone shows nothing less. "Already?"

He's more than a little shocked. He's pleased about it, certainly, because he likes Natalie. And he feels vindicated in his presence here, more confident that he's meant to be here, that he can do this.

...and there's a warmth in him from hearing Arthur so pleased for him.

...he's not being terribly successful but he's already got plans for things he can do. His passion might be interior design eventually. Either way, he'll open the door once she gets there.

He's been thinking about it for a while now, and the way it's gnawing at his mind - how the hell that conversation had gone so badly, where their fucking disconnect kept coming from, why she was so infuriating - is reaching the point of distraction.

Which isn't an issue when he has something else to distract him with, but when they're alone in the kitchen and it keeps running through his head, it makes the kettle markedly more dangerous.

[Exactly three days after their network conversation, Misty arrives in the greenhouse gazebo at the agreed-upon time - a few minutes' early, in fact. She carries a small white rat tucked into the crook of her arm, the leash for its harness looped securely around her wrist.]

[ John, on the other hand, is already here, given he figured he'd come early and check up on things in the art gazebo since he's not really working yet. But he'd found it Petronilla-free and thus he'd just gotten back to work on his gift for Natalie.

Misty will get to see the strange duct-tape harness that effectively just holds one needle in place and how he deftly and quickly throws the yarn around with his other fingers to knit each stitch with the other needle. Just don't look at the knitting too long, Misty. We don't want a repeat of the other day with the painting...

The one thing she might notice, though, is that the colors are black and dark blue and white. ]

He keeps his voice low, but the sound of combat is sharp in his ears as he darts low across the hall: he thinks of his gun and immediately dismisses it. Not him, not with an ally, he'll just make things worse.

[Not long after Natalie goes back to sleep, Misty goes into the kitchen and takes the liberty of serving herself some of the chicken broth she'd cooked up, which she takes back into the bedroom. Instead of eating it, she sits down in her chair with a soft, tired sigh, holding the bowl in both hands and closing her eyes.]

Early morning Feb 10

[]Arthur's a pretty heavy sleeper.

Or, more accurately, he sleeps like the dead, gone as soon as his head hits the pillow. But he's always alert, despite himself, and whenever something shifts in his room he's quick to rouse in a tense moment of anticipation, before he goes back to sleep when it's all clear.

But when he wakes up on the tenth, far earlier than usual, something is-- wrong. In a way he can't identify, but strikes him with such a profound panic that going back to sleep is out of the question, as he pushes himself with an intense caution onto his elbows.]

John? [His voice is a hiss, trying to keep it low as he gropes for his communicator - if nothing else, if there's something here at least he can throw it at them.]

[ Arthur, we're in your office, on the pull out couch. Your bedroom, the bathroom, and the kitchen are gone, the doors missing entirely! No one's said anything on the network, yet, but that might just be everyone still asleep. ]

It's late enough again that Arthur should by all means be asleep, but he's been having a time of it tonight. Knowing Natalie was comatose in the next room was bad enough; leaving only to be attacked almost immediately had cost him most of his willpower in wanting to leave the room again after that.

So instead he's lying on the couch, still fully dressed, still fiddling idly with his hand because he's still somewhat disarmed by the ease it had been fixed, and the sensation of that keeps crawling unpleasantly under his skin.

Eventually he just sighs and gives up completely, and pushes himself to sit upright. He can't remember if he left the lights on for John, even as he lifts his hand to comb his hair out of his eyes again.

He'd been up and about earlier, doing some basic clean up of the room, reading, looking over their supplies, but after he'd finished his chapter, he'd decided to skip back under Arthur's left hand to rest with him even if he couldn't sleep.

[ A few infected she can handle; even feral, they're easy to pick off one by one. But today it was a whole mass of them, and after shooting the first few she saw, Natalie knew she wasn't making it out of this unscathed. She'd fled, saving a few bullets in case the worst happened, and happen it did. Once she became one of them, the infected left her alone, and she waited until they were long gone and silence returned to the wilderness before moving.

Not near her little house. No, let that building be a shelter and a haven for someone else, another tired soul seeking quiet and safety to live out the rest of their life. She heads away from any settlements, the compound, and roads, until finally she is alone with her gun, and the terror of facing the end...

--and one person she hadn't noticed on her way here. ]

[ He wasn't a part of that attack, for any number of reasons, but when he saw them back off of the one woman in the uninfected contingent, well, that was why he'd come. He's good at stealth, good at catching up, good at a lot of things. It almost seems like he's floating with how quiet he approaches and that's why he makes sure he's got cover between him and her before he speaks. ]

It's going to be a long trip back, you know.
