[ In the middle of this thread which Dorian is rubbernecking because ew, there's another shrink on board? Gross. he can't help but send John a message, ]

You know, 'Arthur' can be a last name as well. You're partnered with Firstname Lastname Lastname Firstname.

[ And Dorian outright gets the giggles at that. ]

There's also the fact that names can be colors or items. 'Gray', for instance. I had a friend named 'Basil' and an enemy named 'Glass' back home. Oooh, and then we get the fact that when someone gets a title, their name occasionally changes entirely.

[Arthur's voice can be heard quickly increasing in volume (and exasperation) as he sticks his head in John's room.]

John, what the hell are you yelling about this time?

[ oh buddy. ]

In my world, when you inherit land, join the ranks of peerage, or the king or queen like you a lot, you can become a Marquess, Viscount, Lord, and so on. There's John Douglas, the Marquess of Queensberry. I think he was a Viscount before his father died? Viscount Drumlanrig, I think. I don't remember specifically, though, Queensberry was a complete asshole and I didn't want to spend more time around him than needed.

Oh, and Harry, of course! Lord Henry Wotton—I was much closer with him.

[ Surprise, 'Harry' is also a nickname for 'Henry' for some goddamn reason. ]
lestercraft: (If you say so)

sorry not sorry, john deserves to be (lovingly) bullied

[personal profile] lestercraft 2023-02-28 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. [That familiar voice explains a lot, and he tilts his head towards the sound of the communicator.] Hello, Dorian. You know I'd appreciate if you didn't completely reduce John to baffled frustration for the next while. He was doing quite well without worrying about the origins of names, of all things.

It's a nickname!

[ said like it's the most obvious thing in the world. ]
lestercraft: (I suppose so)

[personal profile] lestercraft 2023-02-28 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about length as much as it is familiarity. The closer you are to someone, usually the more likely you are to use a gross bastardization of their name as a form of affection.

[He tilts his head thoughtfully.] Well. Unless you're being a derisive git.

Exactly. Yes, they have the same number of letters. But I'm not going to call 'Arthur' 'Archie' unless we're incredibly familiar.

[ you know.

like you two are.

(please call him Archie, Dorian would find it hilarious)
]
lestercraft: (Miles to go)

[personal profile] lestercraft 2023-03-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
No-one calls me Archie, you prick.

[Aimed at Dorian, not John, but there's no venom there.]

I got 'Artie', as it happens, when I was a boy, but- I honestly prefer you just calling me 'Arthur', John. You don't need to give me a nickname.

Now Artie, there's no need for that!

[ Dorian is absolutely calling him 'Artie.' ]

I think it's cute.
lestercraft: (Quick fag)

[John will get to appreciate the way Arthur's jaw sets in an expression best described as 'miffed'. Or perhaps exasperated. But it is what it is.]

Dory, maybe. Dorrie? [He pauses for a moment, and a cheeky grin flits across his face.] Dodo, of course.

[personal profile] brushoff 2023-03-01 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Dodo's already taken, thank you very much. That nickname is reserved for Dottie's use and Dottie's use only.
lestercraft: (If you say so)

[personal profile] lestercraft 2023-03-01 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
More likely someone from his extensive past.

Dorothy Parker. So yes, someone from my extensive past.

Lester, you're...what, late 1920s? Early 1930s? You're around her time!
